At Tangmere Growers, we believe that healthy gardens and thriving wildlife go hand in hand. Biodiversity is an essential part of our allotment community, and we work hard to create a natural environment where plants, insects, birds and wildlife can live in harmony alongside our growers.
By gardening sustainably and without the use of harmful chemicals, we help protect the delicate balance of nature while encouraging a rich variety of beneficial insects and wildlife across the site. Every flower planted, pond created, hedge maintained and compost heap built helps support the living ecosystem around us.
Our allotments are home to a wonderful range of wildlife, including:
- Hedgehogs sheltering amongst hedgerows and compost areas
- A wide variety of garden birds and songbirds
- Solitary bees and other important pollinators
- Butterflies and moths visiting flowers throughout the seasons
- Frogs and newts thriving in damp and pond habitats
- Bats feeding on insects at dusk
- Ladybirds, dragonflies, beetles and many other beneficial insects
We actively encourage biodiversity by:
- Planting pollinator-friendly flowers and native plants
- Creating habitats for wildlife through log piles, hedges and wild areas
- Supporting natural pest control through balanced ecosystems
- Composting and improving soil health naturally
- Conserving water and promoting environmentally friendly growing methods
- Avoiding chemical pesticides and herbicides
Our allotments are not only productive growing spaces but also important havens for local wildlife. Watching bees pollinate flowers, hearing birdsong across the plots, or spotting hedgehogs at dusk reminds us how important it is to care for the natural world around us.
Through education, community involvement and sustainable gardening practices, Tangmere Growers is committed to protecting biodiversity for future generations and inspiring others to do the same.
Together, we can grow food while also giving nature a place to flourish.
